In July 2015 the 2.5-year peace process between the Turkish government and the Kurdish rebel group PKK came to an abrupt end, thus resuming the long, bitter conflict. Border tensions, Turkey’s suspected assistance to ISIS, and the ensuing violent riots fanned the flames of war anew in the region. The death toll continues to stack with 886 Turkish security personnel killed, as well as 1.081 Kurd militants according to Crisis Group.
