Clothes, unlike other basic needs, do not have an expiration date. However, they do fade and get loose with use over time. If you have a favorite shirt that you have had for years but you’re worried because the color is starting to fade, no worries, don’t throw it away because it can still be fixed. Here are some tips and tricks to make your clothes as good as new.
RESTORING CLOTHES
• White Clothes
If you think restoring an old white shirt is very difficult, think again. All you need is some lukewarm water and some oxygen bleach. Using these two materials, you can restore your favorite white shirt without having to worry about it being destroyed completely.
Simply soak it with the lukewarm water mixed with some oxygen bleach and leave it for a couple of hours, depending on how white you want it to be. It’s advisable to leave it for an entire day to make sure it will be at its whitest.
Another way you can try is to soak the shirt in baking soda. Just combine 4 liters of warm water and mix in a cup of baking soda in a basin and let your shirt soak for about 8-10 hours.
The baking soda deodorizes the shirt and at the same time whitening it so it’s like a win-win situation for you.
Last but not the least is by using some aspirin. Yes, believe it or not, this actually works. Just dissolve some aspirin in 8 liters of water. About 325mg of aspirin would be enough and then soak your white shirt into the mixture and let it stay there for about 8 hours as well.
But make sure that the entire shirt is completely submerged into the water mixture. However, it advisable to crush the aspirin before you mix it into the water so that it will dissolve quickly.
• Black Clothes
It is inevitable to stop black clothing from fading after it has been worn and wash over and over again. Instead of getting some new ones, why not just save money and at the same time save that favorite black shirt of yours.
One of the best things you can do to restore that black shirt is with the use of coffee. Turn on your washing machine and wash the black clothes the normal way. It is best if these clothes are made of cotton.
While it is washing, brew a pot of the strongest black coffee you can get. 2 cups of coffee will be enough and once it’s done brewing, fill the washing machine with the 2 cups of coffee and wash it again like you normally would.
One of the nicest thing about using coffee is that it is non-toxic so you don’t need to worry about staining your washing machine. Just simply hang your clothes to dry and when it is dry, you can have your favorite black shirt looking good as new.
• Colored Clothes
Now that we’re done with the white and the black clothing, let’s move on to the colored ones. There is only one most effective way to restore brightness into your favorite shirt and that is with the use of vinegar.
A cup of white vinegar is all you need and you add this to the washing machine as it cycles normally. Because vinegar has a property to set the color back and prevent the detergents to actually stay on the colored clothes because it is one of the reasons why it fades.
Don’t worry though because your colored clothes won’t smell bad because of the vinegar since the smell will evaporate during rinsing.
However, if the smell lingers for a bit then just let the colored clothes dry out. Once it is dry, you will notice how the color of your clothes brightens up like it normally was when you bought it.
We don’t necessarily need to throw away something just because it doesn’t look like it did before. If it can still be fixed, then fix it. Yes, you can buy new clothes and skip all this trouble of washing and mixing. However, you can save and spend money for other things instead so it can be worth your while to restore your old clothes.
