Harry Belafonte, Born in 1927 – Calypso
As an African American growing up in the United States, Harry Belafonte overcame a rough childhood and racial restrictions. In the mid-1950s, his songs were enormously popular in middle-class American households, and they helped to spread calypso music all across the world. For this very reason, Harry was also dubbed the “King of Calypso.”
He is undoubtedly one of the most well-known singers and entertainers of the twentieth century, and that is a known fact. However, Belafonte has invested a fair share of his life in helping people and fighting for what is right. For his contribution, he has also been honored with 3 Grammys, 1 Emmy, and 1 Tony Awards.
