Richard O’Brien, Born in 1942 – The Rocky Horror Picture Show
Richard Timothy Smith, better known by his stage name Richard O’Brien, is a gifted writer, actor, musician, and television host. In 1973, he wrote the musical, theatrical performance The Rocky Horror Show, which has been running ever since. Richard also co-wrote the screenplay for The Rocky Horror Picture Show, the film adaptation. The film was a huge hit all over the world and had a sizable fan following.
In 2004, the Hamilton City Council in New Zealand dedicated a statue of “Riff Raff,” the character Richard played in the successful film, to honor O’Brien’s commitment to the industries. Amongst his other honors is the 1998 Berlin International Film Festival Award.
